Ditch the Diet Cycle: Finding Food Freedom with Intuitive Eating

Are you tired of the never-ending cycle of diets that promise quick fixes but often leave you feeling frustrated, confused, hungry and stuck? If you’ve struggled for years with disordered eating patterns, weight gain, and digestive issues, you’re not alone. In this blog post, we’ll explore why diets may be doing more harm than good and introduce you to the empowering concept of intuitive eating.

The Pitfalls of Dieting

For many women and men in their 40s-60s, dieting has been a lifelong pursuit. While it may offer short-term results, it often leads to a range of issues:

  1. Disordered Eating Patterns: Constantly restricting and counting calories can lead to disordered eating habits, making it difficult to enjoy meals without guilt or anxiety.
  2. Weight Gain: Paradoxically, diets can lead to weight gain in the long run. When our bodies perceive a calorie deficit, they can slow down metabolism and increase hunger, making it easy to regain lost weight.
  3. Nutrient deficiencies manifest: Restrict-binge eating patterns can ultimately result in nutrient deficiencies which can, in turn, dysregulate other body systems; thyroid, adrenals, bones, gut, etc.
  4. Digestive Issues: Dieting can disrupt your digestive system, causing problems like gas, bloating, constipation, and diarrhea. You may have tried diets like low FODMAP, but the results can be confusing and short-lived.

The Power of Intuitive Eating

Intuitive eating is a refreshing alternative to the dieting treadmill. It’s a philosophy that encourages you to listen to your body, trust your hunger and fullness cues, and make peace with food. Here are some principles of intuitive eating:

  1. Reject the Diet Mentality: Say goodbye to diets and rigid food rules. Instead, embrace a flexible and compassionate approach to eating.
  2. Honor Your Hunger: Listen to your body’s signals and eat when you’re hungry. No more depriving yourself or ignoring hunger pangs. It takes some time to understand these true cues as there can be emotional hunger and hunger-hunger.
  3. Make Peace with Food: Give yourself permission to enjoy all foods, without guilt. This can help break the cycle of binging and restriction AND provides the foundational piece that allows you to develop a personalized diet that is best for YOUR body/health.
  4. Discover Satisfaction: Find pleasure in eating by savoring your food and choosing what truly satisfies you.
  5. Feel Your Fullness: Pay attention to your body’s signals and stop eating when you’re comfortably full. Again, learning and interpreting your cues can be challenging but possible!!

Real Stories of Transformation

To illustrate the positive impact of intuitive eating, here are some real stories from clients who have embraced this approach:

BRAD: I was teetering on the verge of doing something drastic. I would stress eat very badly and claim that I could never live without my meat and potatoes. I got to be the biggest I have ever been, felt like I could barely move. Extremely frustrated with how I allowed myself to get such a bad relationship with food. Embarrassed about the amount and speed with which I ate. I love food, I love the combination of flavors and a huge variety of foods but my mindless eating had gotten out of control. I told myself that before I started researching surgical weight loss procedures, I would go talk to a dietician for a different approach.

Working with Theresa offered me Freedom. No judgement. Through Theresa I found a way to my subconscious that changed my habits forever. No magic, just understanding the different between eating to satisfaction and eating until I’m super full. Felt empowered to keep going and not quit.

Now, I’m down 35 lbs. no surgery. happier with me. feel better eating to satisfaction instead eating so much, that I need a nap. Understanding that I will NOT die if I eat half the amount of food as I did before.

I decided to work with Theresa because she is a local dietitian that was well recommended.  After a conversation with her, I felt she understands a REAL approach to a better relationship with food. I felt it necessary to get professional help with how I viewed food before I got surgery.

I would recommend Theresa’s services because understanding my own food psychology was more important than carbs or calories in/out or whatever the “in” diet is that week. She has a great long lasting way to understand food and its effect on us in our everyday lives. She understands all poor eating habits and navigates you up a different path, a better path of health, confidence and peace with food.

Alyssa: I had been dealing with disordered eating patterns swinging from severe calorie restriction to binge eating that left me out of touch with my body’s needs. I didn’t trust in my ability to feed myself appropriately.

I worked with Theresa Munkvold RDN, LD Nutrition Counseling/YouandFoods. I learned the principles of intuitive eating from Theresa and after a few weeks of increasing my calorie intake I began to be able to identify my hunger cues and what it felt like when I was low on fuel. For the first time in several years, my weight remained stable for five straight weeks while I met with Theresa.  Now I am focused on fueling my body adequately so that it will perform well for me, and instead of ignoring my hunger cues, I honor them.

As an active person struggling with disordered eating, I benefitted greatly from Theresa’s services because I was forced to confront the signals my body had been giving me that I had learned to ignore for so long. Because I failed to listen to my body and supply it with enough fuel, I often succumbed to binge eating on the weekends or at night after strict restrictions during the week or day. Since I shifted my eating focus from “as little as possible” to “as much as my body asks for” I no longer have the urge to binge. Since beginning my meetings with Theresa, I have not engaged in calorie restriction or binge eating on any occasion.

It’s time to leave dieting behind and embrace a more joyful and nourishing way of eating. Join us on this transformative journey towards intuitive eating and digestive wellness.
